The church is located in the old part of town, Bascarsija.  It was built in 1539 and was damaged several times in fires that struck Sarajevo in the past. The present-day structure dates back to the early 18th century. Some important relics brought from all over the world, as well as old manuscripts and books, fine arts pieces, church attire, coins and archaic tools, and the holy relics of St. Thecla, are kept in the church’s museum and the church itself. The museum was erected beside the church in 1890 by Jeftan Despic.
