This house depicts the life of an Orthodox Sarajevan family in the late 19th century and early 20th century. It belonged to a wealthy merchant family. The Despic Family owned shops in Veliki curciluk Street and did trade in fur (curcija). In the first construction phase, the house was a combination of a Bosnian and Oriental architecture. In 1881, during the second construction phase it acquired elements of the European architecture style.

Despic Family is also known for the establishment of a European type of theatre in Sarajevo, in a form of home entertainment. Theatre plays were organized by Hajjii Makso Despic, reputed merchant who was also an administration officer during both the Ottoman and the Austro Hungarian period. The family gave house to the city to be used as a museum building. In 1953, the house became an annex to the Sarajevo Museum.
