On 28th of June, 1914, on the corner of Apel Key and Franjo Josip Streets (today Obala Kulina bana and Zelenih beretki), Gavrilo Princip, a high school student and a member of the Mlada Bosna Organization (Young Bosnia) controlled by a secret association "Black Hand”, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro Hungarian throne and his wife Sophie. The Austro Hungarian Monarchy considered Serbia responsible for the act and sent an ultimatum on 23rd of July 1914. Soon, they declared war on Serbia. The First World War started...

The Austro Hungarian Monarchy decided to build a bridge a monument dedicated to Franz Ferdinand and Sophie Hohenberg. The monument was placed on the Latin Bridge, across the assassination spot, and was removed upon establishment of a new state – Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians. Instead of the monument, the new government opened a museum called "Museum of the Sarajevo Assassination” with Princip’s footprints paved at the assassination spot. The museum collection was renovated after the war and the museum renamed to "Sarajevo 1878 – 1918”. The museum is a historical display of the Austro Hungarian rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as an illustration of change in life style, customs, arrival of new crafts and architecture, development of economy, science and art.
