The Sarajevo Museum was established in 1949 in order to collect, study, preserve and present the social, economic and cultural history of Sarajevo from its establishment to the present time. The Museum houses nine thematic collections, a library, a collection of photographs and six annexes: Brusa-bezistan, Svrzo''''s House, Despic''''s House, Jewish Museum, Museum of Alija Izetbegovic and Sarajevo 1878 - 1918 Museum.

The Head Office is situated in Kosta Hörmann’s Villa, a 19th c. representative house located in Josip Stadler’s Street. The Villa was built for Kosta Hörmann, a high official of the Austro-Hungarian Administration Office and the first director of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
