The museum was established in 1888. It is the oldest contemporary western cultural and scientific institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The museum building was erected in 1912. It has four pavilions hovering over a beautiful botanical garden. The open areas in the front, central and back part have a few valuable medieval tombstones – stecak.

Ever since its establishment, the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina has exhibited artifacts from various scientific categories: history, geography, archaeology (prehistoric, Antic and Medieval Age), ethnology, history of art, natural sciences (biology, geology and mineralogy), language and literature, statistics and bibliography. Over time, these categories were formed into three departments, and today the artifacts can be seen in Archaeology, Ethnology and the Natural Sciences department.

One of the most valuable museum artifacts is the illustrated Jewish manuscript Haggadah which was brought to Sarajevo with the arrival of Sephardic Jews in the 16th century.
